Liberty Process Ltd, based in Cannock, both supply & install quality food processing equipment mainly to the UK market.  Their primary focus is to assist specialist food producers to increase batch sizes and improve efficiency, without detriment to, and on many occasions, enhance the quality of their product.

They recently approached ACI with a requirement for drying food pouches and pre-packed food products before labelling and packaging.

Initially we submitted a budgetary quote based on the information supplied over the phone, but the Customer took up our offer of on-site testing and brought some of the actual products to ACI’s testing facility in Axminster.

The initial tests carried out used 2 x Air knives (1 above and 1 below) and confirmed that ACI Air Knives were an excellent solution for complete product drying, but it also highlighted a possible issue.  The food foil pouches are relatively light and when exposed to a strong air flow were being held back and occasionally lifted by the air pressure. The problem wasn’t so prevalent on the heavier trays and laminated pouches being tested, but this drawback had to be eliminated if Liberty’s end-user was going to accept this solution.

To successfully overcome it, as well as recommending an optimum conveyor speed, our technical engineers simply adjusted the test rig to include a slightly different arrangement of Air Knives (4 x Air Knives, 2 above and 2 below) and then balanced the pressure accordingly, using the integrated manual control valves.  All three products now passed through without lifting and were totally dry.

We recently began manufacturing our own range of straight conveyor systems suitable for use in industrial and hygiene-sensitive environments common to the food and pharmaceutical industries. This led to Liberty requesting that we both designed and supplied a full turnkey solution consisting of the Air Knife Drying System, Conveyor and suitable Controls.

A new quote was submitted to Liberty Process and the full System was ordered in December 2015.
