Glossary of Custom Fan Terms & Technical Features
This glossary explains key terms and components, whether you want to learn more about industrial fan technology, upgrade an existing system, or specify a fully bespoke fan solution. From materials and certifications to mounting accessories and performance upgrades, you’ll find concise definitions to help you confidently navigate the world of custom fan engineering.
Fan Design & Components
Impeller
The rotating part of a fan that moves air can be designed for specific pressure and flow requirements
Housing
The external casing that directs airflow and protects internal components.
Custom Impeller Geometry
A bespoke blade design engineered for optimised airflow, noise reduction, or specific performance metrics.
Sealed Bearings
Bearings are designed to prevent the ingress of dust, moisture, or contaminants, improving fan lifespan.
Materials & Coatings
316l Stainless Steel
A high-grade stainless-steel ideal for hygienic and corrosive environments (e.g., food, pharma).
PTFE Coating
A chemical-resistant, non-stick coating used for easy-clean surfaces and durability.
Marine-Grade C5M Coating
A protective coating for fans exposed to offshore or coastal environments, preventing salt corrosion.
Powder Coating
A durable, electrostatically applied coating available in various finishes and colours.
Compliance & Certifications
ATEX Certification
Compliance marking for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (e.g., dust, gas).
IP Rating (Ingress Protection)
A two-digit code specifying protection against solids and liquids (e.g., IP55, IP66).
CE Marking
Confirms compliance with EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements.
Fan Features & Upgrades
Anti-Vibration Mounts
Components that absorb and isolate vibration between the fan and its mounting surface, reducing noise, wear, and stress on structures.
Drain Plug
A threaded outlet that allows condensation, moisture, or cleaning fluids to be safely drained from the fan housing, preventing buildup and corrosion.
Weatherproof Enclosures
Protective casings rated for resistance to dust, water, and weather ensuring the fan’s motor and electronics are shielded from environmental exposure.
Fan Guards
Safety barriers, typically made of mesh or perforated metal, prevent accidental contact with moving blades and comply with workplace safety standards.
Inverter (Variable Speed Drive)
A device that allows precise fan speed adjustment by controlling motor frequency, optimising airflow and improving energy efficiency.
Non-Return Valve
A valve that permits airflow in one direction only, preventing backflow that can cause pressure drops or system contamination when the fan is not running.
Flow-Control Valve
A device used to regulate airflow rate and pressure within a ducted system, ensuring stable performance.
Duct Spigot
A connector, often cylindrical or rectangular, that enables ducting to be securely attached to the fan housing, ensuring airtight airflow transfer.
Adapter Plate
A custom or standard plate that allows the fan to be mounted onto surfaces with non-standard openings or to retrofit into existing systems.
Mounting Brackets
Structural supports made from steel, stainless steel, or aluminium, designed to securely fix the fan to walls, ceilings, or frames.
Pedestals (Fan Stand)
Freestanding support structures are used when the fan cannot be wall- or ceiling-mounted, offering stability and flexibility in floor-level installations.
Filter Types & Functions
Mesh Filter
A durable, reusable filter made of metal or plastic mesh that captures larger particles such as dust, fibres, and debris, typically used as a first-line barrier.
Panel Filter
A flat, pleated filter that increases surface area to trap finer dust and particulate matter, improving air cleanliness and protecting downstream equipment.
Bag Filter
A deep, pocketed filter used in industrial settings to capture high volumes of fine dust and particulate, enabling extended service life between replacements.
HEPA Filter
A high-efficiency particulate air filter that captures at least 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, used in cleanrooms and environments requiring strict air purity.
Carbon Filter
A filter containing activated carbon granules or sheets that adsorb odours, volatile organic compounds (VOCS), and gaseous pollutants from the air stream.
